As of Fall 2007, all students preparing theses or dissertations to submit to the Institute for
Graduate Studies in the Social Sciences must prepare their theses according to the Institute
Style Guide, as described on this website. Upon submission, all theses are checked to make sure they conform to the required format. Papers that have not been prepared according to the specified format will not be accepted by the Institute.
Once a thesis is accepted by the Institute, it is considered to be a publication of Bogazici University. Hard copies are placed in the BU Library and a digital version is made available on the World Wide Web. The Institute requires that every text be prepared according to a single format, whether or not it has been edited by our office. The style required by the Institute is based on The Chicago Manual of Style, 5th edition, with a few modifications decided upon by the Institute's Board of Directors. Any deviation from the proscribed format must be approved by the Board. Questions from faculty members about the Style Guide or these policies may be directed to the Board of Directors through the Institute's main office. Editing Services for Theses and DissertationsEditing is recommended for graduate students who are serious about their careers and able to plan their writing schedule to allow enough time for the process. Students should be aware that once they enter into an agreement with the Institute to have their theses edited, they are required to make the corrections indicated. Students who are not interested in having their papers edited must still prepare their papers according to the required format and may click on this link to go to the Style Guide Whether students choose to have their papers edited or not, they are always welcome to contact our staff with any questions about manuscript preparation.
